A Resource About Teen Smoking
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While we continue to educate adults about the dangers of smoking, with
some positive results, it may well be that we are losing the battle where
teenagers are concerned. According to a fact sheet issued by the American
Academy of Pediatrics, more than 3,000 teenagers become regular smokers each
DAY in the United States, adding up to more than one million adolescents who
start smoking each year. And the sooner they start, the sooner they die.
Smokers who start before the age of 15 have cancer rates 19 times higher than
nonsmokers.
Concerned with the growing number of U.S. teens who smoke and the
additional growing number of teens who start smoking every day, the American
Academy of Pediatrics wants you to have its new brochure, "Smoking: Guidelines
for Teens". It may be just the information both you and your teenager need to
stop the smoking habit before it gets your youngster in its clutches. It is
easy to obtain and it is free. Send your request, along with a stamped,
self-addressed business size envelope to: Teen Smoking, Dept. C, American
Academy of Pediatrics, P.O. Box 927, Elk Grove Village, IL 60009-0927. This
is not an offer you can refuse!
